Real Madrid striker Benzema facing trial in attempted blackmail case

Karim Benzema will stand trial for his alleged involvement in an attempted blackmail case targeting former France team-mate Mathieu Valbuena over a sex tape.

Prosecutors in Versailles confirmed the development regarding the Real Madrid striker and four others on Thursday, according to reports in France.

Benzema, who denies any wrongdoing, was charged in 2015 in relation to the incident. He previously appealed against the charge but is now set for trial.

The decision to take this to trial is absurd and unfair, Sylvain Cormier, his lawyer, told EFE. Benzema doesn t have anything to be blamed for.

Paul-Albert Iweins, Valbuena s counsel, told L Equipe the decision was the logical continuation of the instruction which perfectly established the participation …

Canada star Sinclair breaks all-time international goal record

Canada captain Christine Sinclair became the all-time leading goalscorer across men s and women s international football on Wednesday.

The attacker broke Abby Wambach s record when she scored her 185th goal for Canada in the 23rd minute of an 11-0 win over Saint Kitts and Nevis in Olympic Games qualifying.

Sinclair, 36, earlier opened the scoring with a seventh-minute penalty in her 290th international appearance.

United States legend Wambach who netted her 184th goal in 2015 held the record for over six years after surpassing compatriot Mia Hamm s 158 goals in June 2013.

I definitely feel a relief, Sinclair, an international since 2000, told Canada Soccer.

She made history tonight. Post-match comments from our Captain Christine Sinclair!

Paris Saint-Germain 1-2 Manchester City: De Bruyne and Mahrez complete impressive comeback

Manchester City produced a sensational second-half turnaround to seize control of their Champions League semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain, Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez getting the goals in a 2-1 first-leg triumph.

A pulsating contest at the Parc des Princes saw PSG take a 15th minute lead when captain Marquinhos – returning to action from a groin injury – headed in at a corner.

However, having been second best during the first half, City were vastly improved after the break, an equaliser arriving when De Bruyne s curling delivery into the penalty area drifted beyond everybody to find the net.

An 18th straight away triumph for Pep Guardiola s side was secured courtesy of a Mahrez free-kick that found a gap in the wall and, having lost control of th…

Saturday December 10th
BST 12:30 Ipswich vs Peterborough

While Ipswich might have suffered last-gasp heartbreak at home against Fleetwood last weekend, Saturday s hosts should be smelling a golden chance to make an immediate return to winning ways here. Although Kieran McKenna s men might have missed out on a play-off spot last season, the former Manchester United coach has seen his squad come roaring back in some style. Holding a one-point buffer from dropping out of the top-two and tipped as one…

He’s our player – Frank Lampard defends Carney Chukwuemeka decision

Frank Lampard has defended Chelsea’s decision not to allow Carney Chukwuemeka to join the England Under-20 squad for the World Cup in Argentina.

The 19-year-old is one of two players from the club to have been withheld from manager Ian Foster’s selection, with midfielder Lewis Hall also told he must stay for the remainder of the season.

Hall started as Chelsea drew with Nottingham Forest last weekend and Lampard has indicated he will play a part in his side’s remaining three matches, but Chukwuemeka has started only twice since December and has not been in the matchday squad for any of the last eight games.

Lampard said that owing to injuries the club deemed it necessary to keep the former Aston Villa player, who arrived at Stamford Bridge in a £20million …

Manchester United 0-2 Burnley: Solskjaer´s men dreadful in embarrassing defeat

Goals from Burnley s Chris Wood and Jay Rodriguez inflicted an embarrassing 2-0 defeat on Manchester United at Old Trafford, a loss that will surely bring Ole Gunnar Solskjaer s position into question once again.

It was Solskjaer s first home league match as United manager without Marcus Rashford  who is set for a long absence with a back injury  and his absence was telling, as the Red Devils showed little cutting edge in the final third against a Burnley side that was typically set up to frustrate.

Although United dominated much of the first half, the chances they created were wasted and Burnley were far more clinical, going into the break with a one-goal lead thanks to Wood despite having just three shots to the hosts 11.

United were arguably even worse after…

Klopp calls for Salah protection, says low foul count against Liverpool striker is ´absolutely crazy

Jurgen Klopp is astounded by how few free-kicks Mohamed Salah wins for Liverpool – claiming referees are not whistling often enough.

Liverpool boss Klopp spoke out on the eve of Liverpool s trip to face in-form Arsenal in the Premier League, hoping Salah will recover from a slight foot injury to feature.

The Egyptian is the league s top scorer with 20 goals, but he has won just 16 fouls this season, far fewer than many fellow forwards in the competition.

Among the seven leading scorers in the Premier League, only 12-goal Cristiano Ronaldo has been awarded fouls against him as rarely as Salah – the Manchester United man also earning 16 free-kicks.

Salah s Reds team-mates Sadio Mane and Diogo Jota are among that leading pack and have won 37 and 33 fouls…

Real Valladolid 1-2 Atletico Madrid: Three Things We Learned

They did it the hard way but once again, Atletico Madrid have been able to upset the established order and break the resistance of Spanish football s top two clubs. They did so after a fantastic campaign in which they were clearly the most consistent team in La Liga, and they finished it off by coming from behind to beat Real Valladolid 2-1 and capture the title.

The Suarez effect

Just like he did in the penultimate game of the season and just like he s done all season, Luis Suarez popped up and made himself the hero of the day for Atletico. They were struggling to really break through against Valladolid but with the game finely poised at 1-1, he helped his side to hit that next gear. Barcelona let him go because they felt as if he was past his best, but throughout the campaig…

Atalanta v PSG: The battle of the Champions League´s great entertainers

It might not have been planned, but the events of 2020 have produced a version of the Champions League knockout phase that could well be a breath of fresh air.

In exchange for traditional heavyweights going head-to-head over two legs, the quarter-finals will each consist of one match, in the neutral surroundings of Lisbon.

What s more, six of the eight teams have never won the tournament, including Atalanta and Paris Saint-Germain.

They re not really comparable for their approaches off the pitch: Atalanta s record signing, Luis Muriel, cost less than a 10th of the fee PSG paid for Neymar. Still, these are two teams going toe-to-toe this season when it comes to entertainment value.

Using Opta data, we examine why Atalanta versus PSG could be a truly spect…
